Your owner’s manual or manufacturer maintenance schedule should be the first place you look. It identifies the recommended oil specification, viscosity, maintenance interval, and any special requirements for your engine.

Some manufacturers provide a mileage-and-time schedule, while others rely primarily on an electronic maintenance reminder or oil-life monitoring system.

Following the manufacturer’s schedule is especially important for newer vehicles and vehicles that remain under warranty.
